So? What is the Curly Girl Method all about?
The Curly Girl Method (CGM) is a haircare approach designed to help people with naturally curly, wavy,
or coily hair enhance their texture, reduce frizz, and improve hair health by avoiding harsh products and techniques.
It was popularized by Lorraine Massey in her 2001 book Curly Girl: The Handbook.
Here’s the gist:
Core Principles
Avoid Sulfates
Sulfates (harsh detergents in many shampoos) strip natural oils and dry out curls.
Instead, use sulfate-free cleansers or “low-poo” shampoos, or wash with conditioner (“co-washing”).
Avoid Silicones
Silicones coat the hair, making it feel smooth but blocking moisture from getting in.
They require sulfates to remove, which is why both are avoided.
No Heat Styling
High heat from blow dryers, straighteners, or curling irons can damage curl structure.
Air-dry or use a diffuser on low heat.
No Brushing Dry Hair
Brushing disrupts curl clumps and causes frizz.
Detangle gently with fingers or a wide-tooth comb while hair is wet and conditioned.
Why It Works
Curls are naturally drier than straight hair because the spiral shape makes it harder for scalp oils to travel down the hair shaft. By focusing on moisture, gentle handling, and avoiding buildup, curls tend to become softer, shinier, and more defined over time.
